iUniverse self-help author Joy Brisbane, a psychic medium and counselor, talks about her book Walking with Spirit in Part One of her interview.
What can you tell us about Walking with Spirit?
Walking with Spirit is a self-help inner-growth, spiritual development book. It is written in a simple way for easy reading and understanding. The book’s thirty short and succinct chapters cover a wide variety of subjects such as:
- What is psychic ability
- Judgement or assessment
- Self-love and forgiveness
- The power of the mind
- Awakening to self
- The healing power of colour
Walking with Spirit asks of the reader to open their heart and mind to the possibility of healing self. When we step into our divine heritage of living a joyful life; when we find the courage and strength to be who we truly are – then we enter into the experience of finding inner freedom. We find our divine essence.
Do you have literary influences that have helped you develop in your genre, subject and style?
After the death of my husband in 2002, I searched around for books and meditations to help me move through the deep grief I was feeling. I found only a handful of books that I could tolerate, books that could help me at a time when my mind was clouded by fear and my heart aching with deep pain. Most of the books were too big to wade through, too philosophical to break through the barrier of fear and confusion and too far removed from what I was experiencing and feeling. A thought slowly crept into my mind. Write books that will help people who are going through what you are experiencing. Write books that are easy to read and succinctly get to the messages that will help people to move through their pain and reclaim happiness. I wrote my first book, When Do The Tears Stop?
What inspired you to write your book, and how long did it take you to finish it?
I have been trained in Nursing, counselling and psychic development. When I began to surface from the dark depths of grief, I realised I needed to find a new life for myself. I began to work as a grief counsellor, combining my training and my gifts. I felt the wisdom I had gained through my experience with grief needed to be shared. Within six months my clientele had mushroomed out until I was working full time.
I realised it was the combination of my counselling skills, my gifts as a psychic medium and my compassion that was drawing people to me. I had this continuous thought, “And I am only seeing a tiny sample of the many people across this world who are grieving, and getting trapped in that grief.” It was impossible for me to be present for all those hurting people and so I wrote my second book Walking with Spirit. My desire, my passion in writing this book was to reach as many people as I could, to help them move beyond those dark depths and to reclaim happiness; to get out of the foggy turmoil of thoughts and to reach inwards to the wisdom and beauty of their own soul.
The book took me one and a half years to write, drawing on my own experiences and on the experiences of some of my clients.
