iUniverse introduces poet M.D. Smith!

iUniverse is delighted to introduce M.D. Smith, who below talks about her publication of poems, In The Spirit: Poems of My Thoughts • Roots of My Heart.

Please briefly describe your book . . .

In The Spirit: Poems of My Thoughts • Roots of My Heart is the joint publication of my first two creative writing collections and my debut publication with iUniverse. As stated on the back cover, the content “is an eclectic mix of inspirational poems, personal thoughts, and a splash of short stories and songs.”

And can you tell us a little about yourself . . .

I am a native of West Lynn, MA, who developed a strong Christian faith through my upbringing. My epithet is educator, entrepreneur, mentor, author, activist, motivational speaker, and retired professional basketball player.

Do you have any particular literary influences?

My literary voice is authentically mine. However, my all-time favorite writer is Maya Angelou.

Primarily, the inspiration for my creative writing flows from my observations and thoughts about personal experiences and current events. My decision to publish this book (and my forthcoming ones) is based on my desire and the encouragement of family & friends to share my creative writing with as many people as possible.

What is the one message you would like to convey to your readers?

Persevere • Strive • Dream • Achieve

Are you working on a sequel to your book?

There are no sequels to this debut publication. Rather, there are (3) forthcoming titles which will also be joint publications of my creative writing collections.

Are there any events, marketing ideas, or promotions planned for your book?

With the support of my iUniverse Book Consultant and “life circle,” I plan to coordinate a launch party, book readings & signings, activate distribution opportunities, and all of my publications will be available        for non-profits to use as a fundraising tool and keep 100% of proceeds. Regarding accolades, I am honored to have received numerous comments of appreciation from family, friends, spoken word peers, for a few commissioned poems, and a 2007 “Outstanding Poetry Award” from the International Library of Poetry for my poem, “A Vision of Hope”(which is in this debut publication).

What was your favorite part of your publishing experience, overall and with iUniverse?

My favorite overall part of this debut publishing experience was officially completing the process. I thoroughly appreciated the personalized & professional service that iUniverse provided to ensure an enjoyable experience.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Whatever you write, be true to your voice and never compromise your style or truth.”
