Please briefly describe your book . . .

The Treasure of Valcour Island focuses on beautiful Lake Champlain. The Treasure of Valcour Island is an interesting and exciting blend of lake history and lake lore, woven into a thrilling, fast paced murder mystery.

And can you tell us a little about yourself?

I completed a 25-year career in the New York State Police, and supervised state police detectives during the final 10-years of my career. I attended the FBI Academy. I supervised design of a New York State Police Hostage Negotiation Training Program, and Suicide Intervention Program. I also supervised design of a “First Officer Response to a High Crisis Incident training program. I also completed a 2nd career in Industrial Security. After retiring, I wrote articles for a North Country business magazine, and penned 6 books: Fatal Impeachment, (Fiction), Reflections From the Shield, two books (autobiography), The Day the Catskills Cried, (true crime), The Captain of the Juniper (biography), and The Treasure of Valcour Island (fiction). I have also written poetry and short stories, which have been published.

Do you have any particular literary influences?

While attending college in mid-life, my Professor impressed by my writing style and suggested I continue writing professionally. While living on Lake Champlain, I became fascinated with the beauty of the area, and studied lake history, lake legends and lake lore. While boating on the lake, I observed an anomaly in the lake that we attributed to “Champ” legendary lake creature.

What is the one message you would like to convey to your readers?

Reading should be enjoyable and a time of relaxation.

Are you working on a sequel to your book?

The Treasure of Valcour Island was written with the intent of a follow up sequel. I am presently about one-third through sequel manuscript.

Are there any events, marketing ideas, or promotions planned for your book?

I am presently in the process of scheduling book signings in New York and Georgia. Various media outlets have been contacted for hopeful promotion. I recently received correspondence from an individual who teaches Criminal Justice. He reported that he uses my books in his class and that recently he substituted another author. His students asked him to return to using “Beyea’s” books.

What was your favorite part of your publishing experience, overall and with iUniverse?

I appreciate the professionalism and friendliness of the employees of iUniverse. They have been easy to work with.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring authors?

There are many excellent writers who are inspired to write ‘a best seller.’ After laboring to produce their masterpiece, they run into the frustration of getting their work published. I would encourage them not to become discouraged when mainstream publishing companies refuse to even examine their work. Consider self-publishing and consider using an on-line publishing company, like iUniverse.
